Cessna 175B G-ARML EngineContinental GO-300 Engine This engine delivers 30 hp more than the standard 172 offer. This makes the Cessna 175 more robust and better suited for bigger loads and short take offs and landings. The engine is very reliable and veteran 175s are in use all over the world. However if you have been doing your research you may have read about so called unreliability problems associated with the 175's engine. When properly flown and maintained the engine delivers a superb performance and is reliable. Problems arise if the GO-300 is operated like a direct-drive engine, i.e. at too low an rpm rate. This places strain on the rotary parts. The GO-300 has a reducing gearbox. Designed to swing an 80-inch propeller at 2,400 rpm, the engine has to turn at 3,200 rpm. I have used the rpm settings recommended by Cessna and have had no problems. The propellor is a fixed pitch metal unit, which is maintenance free. |
